Medieval Miniatures

This page is dedicated to my little tributes to the weird and wonderful illustrations found in the margins of medieval illuminated manuscripts The humanity and humour of the artists and scribes that created these books really becomes apparent, once you start noticing the margins. My versions are typically created with a few liberties and embellishments of my own, using watercolour, ink, casein and 23.75 carat gold, mounted to a wooden panel and varnished. The varnish protects the paintings and allows the gold leaf to sing, without being confined behind a pane of glass.
