Aspidochelone (10.5" x 8.5")

£195.00

I borrowed this image from a bestiary created arount 1270, depicting an Aspidochelone. Similar to a whale, this legendary sea creature is so enormous that sailors would mistake it for an island.

I love this scene of imminent chaos, as the sailors realise their mistake. It’s not the first time I’ve come across an illumination from many centuries ago that would not look out of place in a modern children’s book. A digitised version of the original bestiary can be found online, courtesy of the Getty collection.

This artwork has been recreated by me using watercolour, ink and casein, embellished with 23.75 carat gold. The painting is varnished and mounted to a wooden panel and offered ready to hang in a beautiful 9½ x 7½” wooden frame

The listed price includes free UK shipping. I’m also very happy to ship worldwide - if you live outside the UK, please contact me to discuss postage options for your country.
