Bewitched (9.5" x 9.5")

£150.00

This painting was inspired by a little piece of marginalia that is often cited as the first known depiction of a witch* flying a broomstick. The illustratio appears in a manuscript entitled ‘Les Champion des Dames’ by Martin le Franc (1451), which is in the care of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. I love how cheerful she looks as she soars on her broom - she’s clearly in her happy place.

My little tribute has been created, with many liberties and embellishments of my own, using watercolour, ink and casein, embellished with 23.75 carat gold. The painting is varnished and mounted to a wooden panel and offered ready to hang in a beautiful wooden frame with outer dimensions of 9” x 9”.

The listed price includes free UK shipping. I am very happy to ship worldwide upon request. (If you live outside the UK, please contact me to discuss the postage options for your country.)

* in this case, the ‘witch’ is actually a member of the Waldesians, a Christan sect that was seen as heretical by the pope.
